Social Studies-3rd Grade
Unit 1—Map Features, Geographic Tools, and Communities
I. Day 1—Create a Country
A. Social studies teacher introduces basic map features and elements, using SmartBoard to show examples
B. Mrs. Crumbley divides class into pairs or trios and distributes art supplies. The groups will work together to imagine their own fictional country. They will then create a Physical Map, including several required elements:
1. Title
2. Compass rose
3. Scale
4. Landforms (example: mountains, bodies of water)
5. Cities or towns
6. Symbols and map key
C. As students finish, Mrs. Crumbley will digitize their maps to project on the SmartBoard for students to share with one another
II. Day 2—Create a Country
A. Social studies teacher does a refresher of map features and types
B. Groups work to create a Political Map and a Resource Map for their country from the previous lesson, including the following elements:
1. Title
2. Compass rose
3. Scale
4. Cities or towns
5. Boundaries and regions (for political map)
6. Natural resources (for resource map)
7. Symbols and map key
C. As students finish, Mrs. Crumbley will digitize their maps to project on the SmartBoard for students to share with one another
All maps will be shared with the class via email and will also be made available on the media center website to look at.
